I’m starting to feel like somebody never wants me to enjoy a Lakewood BlueClaws game.

I have had this amazing track record over the years in which bad weather follows me to FirstEnergy Park and that streak continued last night.  We had a Townsquare event in the Monmouth Medical Center Champions Club and while the gates opened and our food was served something was missing: baseball.

After a lengthy delay at the start the game was postponed and while we did enjoy our evening it ended earlier than expected.  Hospitality Manager Bryan Genis and his staff did a great job but the black cloud refuses to go away.  Longtime BlueClaws Vice President of Community Relations Jim DeAngelis has asked that I follow the Trenton Thunder in the future.

Congratulations to Brian Staub who has filled the final football coaching vacancy in the Shore Conference by being named the head coach at Point Pleasant Borough.  Staub spent the past two seasons running the Panthers offense under head coach Matt Cilento who resigned earlier this month to spend more time with his family.

A former quarterback at Brick Memorial, Staub takes over a Boro team that went 11-1 last season but will lose just about all its major contributors to graduation.

Former Jackson Memorial baseball standout Matt Thaiss is one step away from the major leagues after being promoted to the LA Angels Triple A team on Tuesday.

Thaiss, a converted catcher who now plays first base, went 0-3 with a walk in his debut with the Salt Lake Bees of the Pacific Coast League.  The 23-year old ex-Jaguar and former University of Virginia standout batted .287 with 6 homers and 25 RBI’s at Double A Mobile before Tuesday’s call up.

While the Yankees continue to belt home runs at a record base the Mets had to resort to not only signing a 37-year old former slugger who was released earlier in the week, but start him last night just minutes after he arrived at the ballpark.

The irony is that Jose Bautista actually doubled and scored their only run in a loss to Miami.
