The Frustration of Being a Mets Fan, a Continuing Series

I had no intentions of talking about baseball this morning but I beg your forgiveness so I can explain what it’s so frustrating to be a Mets fan and saddled with ownership that seems to forget the team plays in New York and not Kansas City.

All we have heard over the past several months is how the Mets would finally be able to spend some money and bring quality players to CitiField while the Yankees were for the first time talking fiscal responsibility and cutting payroll.  So in the last week the Mets big news was the signing of free agent outfielder Chris Young while the Yanks have acquired All-Star catcher Brian McCann thanks to an $85 million deal and joining him in the Bronx will be centerfielder Jacoby Ellsbury.

In case you did not hear, last night the Yanks and Ellsbury have agreed on a 7-year, $153 million deal to pry him out of Boston.  That’s $238 million committed on a pair of players while the Mets have so far shelled out $7.5 million for a guy who batted .200 last year.  There’s still time for Mets fans to get a present under the Christmas tree but based on past history we’re more likely to get coal in our stockings.

Our Shore Sports Network will broadcast a pair of state sectional championship football games on Saturday from The College of New Jersey.  Point Beach and Shore meet for the second straight week in the Central Jersey Group 1 Finals at 10am and then at 4pm it will be the Group 4 Title game between Brick and Colts Neck.  Both games can be heard on WOBM AM 1160/1310 and will also stream online at

A special thank you to attorney Bob Novy, whose “Inside the Law” program would normally have been heard at 10am Saturday but will now air immediately following the Pt. Beach-Shore game.  Without him agreeing to the move we would not have been able to broadcast the game so again our thanks to Bob.

Earlier in the week we learned that there will be no expansion of the state football playoffs and New Jersey will remain one of only two states that does not crown overall public school champions but rather hands out trophies to 20 sectional champions.

I did not like all the aspects of the proposal to change the current system but the fact remains there is no really good alternative without the elimination of Thanksgiving Day games which so many schools cling to like an old blanket.  It’s time to throw the blanket away.
