My Monday morning take on Super Bowl Sunday which for those who actually did not watch was won by the Denver Broncos 24-10 over the favored Carolina Panthers.

  • As has occurred on many occasions the game itself was anything but super as the teams combined for just two offensive touchdowns, six turnovers, 18 penalties and 12 quarterback sacks. The Broncos won despite managing just 11 first downs and 194 yards of offense, the lowest ever by a Super Bowl winner.
  • Peyton Manning became the first starting quarterback to win Super Bowls with two different teams as he led the Colts to the title nine years earlier.
  • Cam Newton did not have much to celebrate…no touchdown dances or chances to hand the ball to a kid in the end zone. It was a Dab-free game for the league’s MVP.
  • The highlight of the game might have been Lady Gaga’s rendition of the National Anthem which was the best I can remember outside of Whitney Houston’s incomparable performance 25 years ago.
  • As for the halftime show, Well let me clarify my position. I watch the game for the game so to me the idea of the halftime show is just to fill time before the second half kickoff. It seems many focus more on the entertainment then the game itself and a lot of them ripped Coldplay on social media while for the most part praising Beyoncé and Bruno Mars. Frankly I thought the show was fine but I still miss “Up with People.” That’s clearly an indication of how old I am.
  • As for Super Bowl commercials the problem is simple. The measuring stick is so high that most fail plus I don’t like the idea of the commercials being released in advance. For what it’s worth my favorites included the NFL Super Bowl babies commercial with “Seal” featuring babies(in some cases now adults) born 9 months after their parent’s favorite teams won the Super Bowl. I liked the Audi commercial with the ex-astronaut, the Doritos commercial with a woman getting an ultrasound, the Avocados from Mexico ad mocking Scott Baio, the Hyundai First Date commercial with Kevin Hart and the Budweiser Don’t Drive Drunk spot featuring Helen Mirren although I do miss the Clydesdales.
