Officers responding to a report of suspicious characters peering into cars on Spruce Avenue at Appleby Drive about 1:37 AM found several vehicles looted and no one around, police said.

But two sets of footprints led to the 14- and 15-year-old boys on Rustic Drive, in the Middlebrook Apartments development, a short while later, police said.

The teens were charged with burglary and possession of stolen property and placed with their guardians to await family court proceedings.

Police officers are now trying to return the stolen goods to their owners.

Authorities again remind drivers to lock vehicles, park in well-lit areas whenever possible, and remove cash and electronic devices when leaving.

Ocean Township PD Detective Jeffrey Malone is handling the investigation.
