As we discussed about two weeks ago, there's a new food choice at Ocean County's Wawa locations - pizza. After plenty of discussion, I decided it was time to give it a try.

I actually wanted to try it sooner, but it would seem that I wasn't the only local who was itching to give the new lunch option a taste test - the first two times I went in for that specific purpose, they were already sold out of the pizza dough.

But I got lucky today and ordered myself up a pepperoni personal pizza.

First Impressions
You're not going to go hungry. The pizza is a good personal size, and the box definitely has some weight to it. This probably isn't a great health food choice. But if you need a middle of the day, hold you over until dinner option, this is a good choice.

First Bites
If you like deep dish pizza, you'll like Wawa's pizza. It's doughy, soft, and chewy. If you like thin crust, or traditional Jersey shore pizza, this isn't what you're looking for.

Positives
Again, the crust is really good, chewy, and satisfying. I like how they put the cheese on top of the pepperoni, so you don't get the little ponds of pepperoni grease that you tend to get when the toppings are put on after the cheese. The pepperoni is just spicy enough, and the cheese is stringy and tasty.

Negatives
There isn't much sauce at all. I don't know if my particular pizza maker was a little stingy, or if that's how they're supposed to be made. But my pizza only had a little sauce on it, almost like a spread as opposed to a vital part of the pie.

Overall Conclusion
Look, let's be honest - we're in Ocean County, we have literally dozens of exceptional, locally owned pizza joints to choose from. If you're going to Wawa expecting a pizza like you'd get at, say Capone's in downtown Toms River, you're going to be disappointed.

But, if you have to run out to get gas or you're stopping by Wawa anyway and you want a quick, hot, satisfying lunch, the Wawa pizza is a great choice. It's got everything that you'd expect (although, again, it could use more sauce), it's filling, and it's easy to take with you and eat.

If I'm stopping by Wawa anyway and I need a quick lunch or dinner, I wouldn't hesitate to grab a pizza again.
