The mystery of the discolored tap water in sections of Island Heights is solved by the sleuths in the borough's Public Works Department, and it's an episode in the sometimes-uneasy relationship between the mechanical and technological.

It also means a few more days of sporadic discoloration while hydrant flushing is conducted.

According to Assistant DPW Superintendent John Broadback, an alum-injection pump that alternates with a twin pump failed Monday afternoon. The alarm designed to trigger automatically when it senses system abnormalities failed as well, leading to the cloudy water in some parts of the borough.

The water's purity "stayed within state guidlines," Broadback said. "It's really an aesthetic matter. But we consulted with DEP, and they recommended flushing the hydrants to remove any sediment residue that's built over the years."

The pump and the alarm are both repaired, and hydrant flushing is under way, Broadback said, anticipating that it would be completed by Friday. The process also ensures clear lines for firefighters.

If you experience discoloration, hold off on clothes washing and dishwashing, and ease up on the use of hot water. For drinking purposes, run the cold-water tap until it clears.
