With widespread coastal flooding, power outages, and high winds, this week's nor'easter hasn't been pretty. But as we sit here today on January 24th watching the last of it begin to move out, there's one thing that we can take comfort in - at least it wasn't snow.

Usually, setting a record is a good thing. Something to be proud of. Something to brag about and shout from the rooftops. But early this morning, Toms River stood above (or below, as the case may be) the rest of the country for a rather startling reason.

As the first storm of the year ended up dumping up to 9" of snow in some parts of Ocean County, you may have had enterprising folks with shovels knocking on your door. Or maybe not. It seems like that practice may be a thing of the past.

While we dodged most of the winter weather bullet going into Friday morning, it looks like Saturday could be a different story. That being said, the Ocean County Health Department is offering a few suggestions as we head into the heart of winter.

As we anticipate our first snowfall of 2017, some may be looking forward to the dusting that's about to befall Ocean County. But others (myself included) will be grumbling about it. But when we look at the country as a whole, at least we can take solace in the fact that it could be worse.

As we get set to deal with our first snow of winter 2016-2017, it's a good time to remind Ocean County drivers of a few things that seem obvious and some others that you may not think of until it's too late.
