The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection reports 37 syringes were discovered on a 10-mile section of the Ocean County beach on Friday according to News 12 New Jersey. The DEP kept an eye on the beach on Saturday, Sunday and Monday and found no additional waste.

Debris and bags of garbage also washed up onto the beach.

The DEP tells News 12 New Jersey heavy rains and an onshore wind are likely to blame and are still searching foe a source. “We are hoping something might help us to link the source of where they came from but that has not happened yet,” DEP spokesman Larry Ragonese told the Asbury Park Press.

“We alerted the Ocean County Health Department of all findings and are reviewing the debris wash-up. This has led us to be at a triple level alertness,” Ragonese told the paper.  “The state has been working very hard to get these beaches (at Island Beach State Park) up and running and we never want to see even one syringe wash up.”
