With Newark Mayor Cory Booker forgoing a run for Governor in 2013 and "exploring" a run for the U.S. Senate seat held by Frank Lautenberg in 2014, Sweeney has gone to the top of the list of many Democrats  to take on incumbent Chris Christie.

“A lot of party members are asking me if I would run for governor,” Sweeney told the South Jersey Times. “In two years it’s very possible I’d run for U.S. Senate. There are plenty of options and I’m weighing it all.”

Booker has voiced support for a Sweeney run for the Statehouse.

"A decision won’t come any time before the first of the year, he said, adding that he’s “very confident” another successful run for state Senate could set him at the top of the Statehouse again as Senate president.

Gloucester County’s GOP executive committee chairman Larry Wallace thinks Sweeney will "sit this one out"

“I’m getting a lot of calls from a lot of leaders in the state,” Sweeney told the South Jersey Times . “But I have a responsibility with the Senate right now.”
