FAIRFIELD — Police are investigating a suspicious fire tore through a former bowling alley in Cumberland County Thursday.

According to State Police, troopers were dispatched to the building, located on the 800-block of East Commerce Street, for a report of a fire. When police arrived, a witness reported observing "a possible suspect car leaving the scene." State Police said the witness left the area before troopers could conduct an interview.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the structure was intentionally set on fire. Fire departments from several local towns responded to extinguish the blaze.

Police say the building was vacant when the blaze started. There were no serious injuries reported.

Detectives are continuing to investigate the fire as a possible case of arson. They are asking anyone with information to contact Trooper J. Delaney of the Bridgeton Station at 856-451-0101 or Bridgeton Police detectives at 856-451-0106. Police say they are accepting anonymous tips.
