Alan Hill, 28, of Forked River, and MaryAnn Garcia, 36, of Manahawkin, were apprehended January 12 in the Target parking lot, according to Stafford Township police.

A patrolman following up the initial investigation recognized Hill from surveillance images, police said. Authorities allege that in the encounter, Hill was found with hidden items just taken from the store, and goods that were reported as stolen on January 10.

Stafford police credited Facebook followers, saying that their response to the posted surveillance images helped them establish positive identification.

Hill was sent to the Ocean County Jail in Toms River on two third-degree counts of shoplifting. Garcia was released to await court hearings on a third-degree charge of receiving stolen property.
