Barnegat is getting an Acme, according to Township officials. The Asbury Park Press reports the supermarket chain will take over the former Genuardi's food store on West Bay Avenue that has been vacant since closing nearly four years ago.

The closest supermarkets currently are in Lacey and Stafford Townships, making it inconvenient for Barnegat residents, especially seniors, to go food shopping.

While a number of grocery stores have closed this year in Ocean and Monmouth Counties, Acme seems to be the exception in Ocean.

Last year, Stop & Shop in Manalapan, Foodtown in Freehold, and the Super Foodtown in Toms River closed. In 2012, a Pathmark in Stafford also went out of business.

Barnegat officials told the Asbury Park Press the construction of 35 stores and more than 150 apartments near the location of the future ACME will help keep it in business.

ACME officials have not confirmed the deal with Barnegat, according to the Asbury Park Press.

The supermarket is slated to open in early 2016, according to Township officials.
