Summer 2013 at the Jersey Shore [POLL/AUDIO]

No one knows exactly what the New Jersey coastline will look like this summer, but a shore-area lawmaker has offered his optimistic outlook for this year’s tourism season and what it means for the many to follow.

State Senator Christopher Connors (R), whose district encompasses towns in Atlantic, Burlington and Ocean counties, said he truly believes in a positive Jersey shore summer, even though it depends on the rebuild from the worst storm New Jersey has experienced in more than a century.

“A lot of it will depend upon the weather that we get between now and the end of March,” Connors said. “If it’s favorable, then I think a lot more can be done.”

While Connors expressed confidence that many damaged businesses will be up and running by Memorial Day, he said one of the biggest problems to face the shore this summer will be the availability of accommodations. Many of the long-stay establishments, such as hotels and rental units, may not come out of the restoration process in time.

“So we’re going to be getting a lot of daytrippers…spending their time and, hopefully, a lot of their money,” Connors added.

Connors referred to summer 2013, and the progress at the shore, as a step in putting “Sandy behind us.”

“I’m optimistic about having a season that’s going to be a good kickoff for the years to follow,” he said.

Acting Governor Kim Guadagno also commented on the rebuild at the shore, saying New Jersey aims to bounce back “bigger and faster” than anyone has in the past.

“We may have had broken hearts for a while, but we have never had our spirit broken,” Guadagno said.
