Louanne Kane, County Coordinator for the Take Control of Your Health, says the workshops created by Stanford University help people living with any chronic condition .. like diabetes and heart disease or any condition that can't be cured.

"It helps people because they can share the experience they're having and really be heard by the group and supported by each other and also the leaders that are leading the program also have chronic conditions and can empathize, explains Kane."

She says the workshops also help with communication skills, goal setting and dealing with emotions associated with living with a chronic illness ... "and most importantly, to set small goals by breaking down those problems that we're having into small sections and then setting a goal to achieve each week and it gives people a sense of empowerment."

The six-week 2 1/2 hour workshops are designed for people with chronic illnesses and their caretakers. The program provides a book, a relaxation tape and even healthy snacks during the workshop.

Workshops are being held September 11th, 18th, 25th, October 2nd, 9th and 16th from 1p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Anyone 18 and older can participate. Register online here or by calling 732-349-6200
