A small but powerful storm dropped hail and heavy rain in southern Monmouth County and northern Ocean County at midday Tuesday.

While the rest of New Jersey was under sunny skies, radar showed an small area that formed quickly at about 12 noon. News 12 News Jersey reported that flooding trapped motorists in their cars along Princeton Boulevard. Flooding also closed Route 35 southbound in Lavallette at Washington Avenue. First Avenue in Sea Girt was also flooded for a time according to Sea Girt Police.

JCP&L's outage map indicated that nearly 1,500 customers in Point Pleasant were without power while over 500 were in the dark in Brick early Tuesday afternoon. Point Pleasant's Office of Emergency Management reports wires came down near Dorset Dock Road.

The New Jersey Weather and Climate Network at Rutgers reports over an inch of rain fell in Sea Girt while nearly two inches fell in Point Pleasant.

The National Weather Service reports winds of nearly 40 MPH from the storm, which Townsquare meteorologist Dan Zarrow explains formed in a "sweet spot in the atmosphere" thanks to instability and a pocket of moisture.

Zarrow expects more showers and storms through Thursday as a small weather system passes off shore.
