Success in The Classroom and On The Field

Random notes on a Friday the 13th as we head into Father’s Day Weekend:

Laura Dewey
Pinelands Regional senior Laura Dewey, this year’s WOBM Student of the Week scholarship winner (Laura Dewey)

It has been quite a week for soon-to-be Pinelands Regional High School graduate Laura Dewey. At last night’s Senior Awards Night she received the departmental award of the sciences, a math club award, earned a spot on the Principal’s Honor Roll for all four marking periods and was recognized for the community services activities she coordinated as Vice President of the National Honor Society.

Earlier in the week Dewey was randomly selected to receive this year’s WOBM/Gateway Toyota Student of the Week scholarship as her name was chosen from the 38 weekly honorees that made up the latest class of Student of the Week recipients.
Dewey’s senior year has been filled with accolades as both a scholar and athlete and she will be attending Baruch College in Manhattan through their honors program where she plans on majoring in math. She will be getting a little help from WOBM and Gateway Toyota as we will present her with $1000 as our scholarship recipient. Through our partnership with Gateway Toyota of Toms River the Student of the Week program will return for a 19th year in September.

It’s been a little while since I’ve mentioned Todd Frazier and now would be as good a time as any. Simply put the 28-year old from Toms River is having a breakout season and leads the Cincinnati Reds in just about every major offensive category. Frazier is batting .272 with 14 homers, 34 RBI’s and 39 runs scored and in a season of disappointment for Cincinnati has clearly been their shining star.

Not only has the third baseman performed on the field but he’s become one of the Reds most popular players and more and more are sporting his #21 jersey.

The 4th annual A Walk to Believe will take place tomorrow in the parking lot at High Point Solutions Stadium as Rutgers University and Eric LeGrand’s Team LeGrand combine to help raise funds for spinal cord research. There will be on site registration beginning at 8am with the 5K walk to get underway at 10am.

The Toms River High School South Class of 2016 will hold a fundraising gift auction in the school’s cafetorium tomorrow with doors opening at 1pm. The $25 entrance fee includes a bag of assorted tickets and catered food. Proceeds will help the class raise money for its prom.
