Michael DeLeon of Steered Straight is the man behind the film entitled "Kids Are Dying." He said he's hoping to help dispel the "not in my back yard" mentality by helping people understand the origin of the drug crisis.

"I want to show people how we got here, and the systemic misuse and over-prescribing of opiate pain medication statewide," DeLeon said. "Once parents can understand and see how we got here, they'll be more accepting of the problem."

DeLeon said he wants to feature the proliferation of gang activity in New Jersey's suburbs as well.

The project has been in the works for two years, and DeLeon is aiming to take it to a national audience.
