Monday will be the 7th consecutive 90+ degree day in a row, but cooler and potentially wetter weather is expected later this week.

Here are your weather headlines for Monday, August 3, 2015...

Hot Start

Our streak of hot summer days rolls along for the first part of the workweek. High temperatures will be mostly in the lower 90s yet again for both Monday and Tuesday. The good news here is that humidity levels will be manageable for now - that means mornings will be somewhat cool and afternoons will avoid the "oppressive" descriptor. A stiff southwest breeze up to 20 mph will keep the hot air moving under mostly to partly sunny skies. And yes, you'll find some relief from the heat at the Jersey Shore, with highs generally in the 80s right at the beach.

Wet Middle?

While the daytime hours today will remain dry, a round of showers and thunderstorms is possible late Monday evening through early Tuesday morning. The latest model runs, however, have dried out tonight's rain chances quite a bit. Even though the Storm Prediction Center has the northern part of New Jersey in a "Marginal Risk" for severe weather through 8 a.m. Tuesday morning, I think our chance of seeing widespread fierce, loud storms will be pretty low.

Isolated showers and storms will be possible through Tuesday and Tuesday night as well. Again, nothing widespread, but I just can't rule out raindrops falling somewhere in the warm, humid environment.

The best chance for rain this week ultimately may not happen at all... As a front pushes through Wednesday, it will stall south of New Jersey. And, as usual, that front will create a "highway" for atmospheric impulses ("storm systems") to ride along. One such impulse, with potentially heavy rain, will push toward the east coast on Thursday. The big question will be how far south will the front drift - far enough south so the rain avoids New Jersey? We could use a little bit of rain, to green up lawns across the Garden State. But heavy rain could be quite a headache, leading to flash and river flooding. For now, our forecast has light to moderate rain for South Jersey only from Thursday to Friday, with mostly cloudy skies for the rest of the state. However, this precipitation forecast for the end of the workweek is low confidence and subject to change - so please stay tuned for updates as the week presses on.

Cooler Finish

The combination of the midweek front, the clouds, and the potential for rain will (finally) break the heat and push temperatures downward during the second half of this week. Cooler air will leak into New Jersey on Wednesday, ending our long streak of 90-degree days as highs only reach the mid 80s (give or take). The full effects of this cooler air mass will arrive Thursday, combining with mostly cloudy skies to limit highs to barely 80 degrees. Even as the clouds and rain potential clears out for Friday and the weekend, temperatures look to remain just below normal in the comfortably warm lower 80s or so. (For the record, it hasn't been that "cool" in almost three weeks!)
