A group called Comedians at Law, comprised of local comics who have some kind of legal experience, will be in Monmouth County May 24th at the Windansea in Highlands as part of their Law-nmageddon tour.

Comedian Kevin Israel has been doing stand up for nearly a decade now, however in the mean time he graduated law school and is also currently the Chief of Staff for State Senator Jennifer Beck. While lawyers might not be whom most people think of when it comes to comedy, Israel says the stresses of the job mean you need to have a sense of humor to survive. However he notes not all lawyers are miserable people.

“There’s a stereotype we’re trying to break. It kind of comes naturally, lawyers are good public speaker, we have to be quick on our feet, and you have to have a sense of humor to make it in this industry.”

Adding that while most people might not know a very funny lawyer, there’s a good chance they’ve poked fun at the profession.

”Who hasn’t told a lawyer joke? Who hasn’t complained about dealing with a lawyer? From both ends there’s a lot of comedy to be had.”

Israel says though the group has done many tours throughout the country specifically for law firms and law schools, much of the material is done in such a way that even non lawyers can understand it. Israel says that all of the comedians within Comedians At Law are stand ups first and foremost and everyone’s humor is relatable.

“All of us talk about different things. I talk about my family, relationships, my last name’s Israel, obviously I’m Jewish so I talk about being Jewish. I grew up in a town where I was one of the only Jewish kids.”

Isreal, who is a Monmouth County native says he is excited to be performing in his home county on Wednesday. ‘He believes that stand up comedy needs to be presented as an option for residents.
