Stafford Gym Attack Suspect Eludes Police

The Stafford 48-year-old accused of an attack in a gym in the township Tuesday remains outside the grasp of the law. Police are looking for leads.

William Devane is charged with aggravated assault in the incident that left a 39-year-old victim from Waretown suffering head and face lacerations.

Police say they're trying to determine what triggered the attack that erupted while the victim was involved in a workout at Retro Fitness on East Bay Avenue. Devane took a hasty exit before police arrived, and the victim needed treatment at Southern Ocean Medical Center.

No description or photo of Devane has been issued but a municipal judge set bail at $25,000, with no option for release on payment of 10 percent, upon his arrest.
