Granted we had a very mild winter but the first four weeks of spring have for the most part felt winter-like. That is clearly ending as the long-awaited warm up has arrived and that was obvious this weekend.

Many spent time this weekend on outdoor projects, cleaning up their yards and working on their lawns. We headed to the Seaside boardwalk Sunday morning for a nice 4-mile walk and there really is nothing like the backdrop of the beach and ocean, especially when you realize summer is almost here as it’s only 38 days until the start of Memorial Day weekend.

The nice weather, along with special promotions (including $1 tickets) saw the Lakewood BlueClaws cap their first home weekend of the season with their largest crowd in more than four years. 9,112 flocked to FirstEnergy Park Sunday to see the BlueClaws end a six-game losing streak with a 9-0 win over the Greensboro Grasshoppers.

It was the 7th largest crowd in team history and the biggest since August of 2011. The BlueClaws homestand continues with games against Hagerstown tonight, Tuesday and Wednesday at 6:35pm.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ocean County honored some truly special people on Saturday night during their Mentoring Works Gala at Eagle Ridge Golf Club in Lakewood. Saluted were Paul Barlo (one of the founding members of the organization) who received the Dr. Ken Kerr Humanitarian Award, the Jay and Linda Grunin Foundation was honored with the President’s Award, Ralph Wolf and Jersey Coast Appliance received this year’s Corporate Partner Award and Gayle Wayman with the Community Partner Award. Congratulations to all for making a big difference in the lives of children.
