The National Weather Service is forecasting more snow for parts of New Jersey on Sunday.

Snow will start to fall late Sunday afternoon into the evening and could be moderate at times according to a special weather statement issued by the National Weather Service.

In most of New Jersey a half-inch to and inch-and-a-half of snow will accumulate by the time the snow ends around midnight. The snow will mix with rain near the coast.

1-3 inches of snow will fall north of Interstate 80 in Sussex, Warren and Morris counties.

The forecast has prompted the New York City Department of Sanitation to issue an alert for 1 p.m. Sunday. Although accumulations are expected to be modest in the city, the department said it’s loading salt spreaders, attaching plows and preparing tire chains in anticipation of the flakes.

Forecasters say New Jersey’s stormy, frigid pattern will continue with another major storm possible late Wednesday or on Thursday, though a National Weather Service briefing cautions it is too early for specifics but early indications show a snow-to-freezing rain-to-rain event.

“It looks like a fairly strong chance that we’ll see some precipitation, but I wouldn’t get excited about a big snowstorm,” NWS meteeorologist Dean Iovino told the Star-Ledger. “There are still a lot of possibilities.”

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
