It was a quick hitter of a snowfall that came and went within a few hours, dropping under three inches of snow in most areas but making for a slow afternoon ride home.

The week's cold meant that the snow began accumulating quickly on the highways despite the fact that the New Jersey Department of Transportation  pre-treated roads with a brine solution to help with melting.

The heaviest snow fell in southern counties with Moorestown & Delran in Burlington County and Newport in Cumberland County both getting the most at 2 1/2 inches according to the National Weather Service. Nearly 2 inches fell in Freehold while Toms River received an inch-and-a-half.

A fleet of 500 trucks and 1400 contractor plows & spreaders were on standby to plow and spread salt throughout the state.

“NJDOT crews will be out in force to make the evening commute as safe as possible, but it important for motorists to use good judgment and exercise caution as they head home tonight,” said Commissioner James S. Simpson.

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Advisory in advance of the storm for Ocean, Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Gloucester, Cape May, Cumberland and Salem counties for snow to begin falling after 4PM on Friday afternoon and last until just after midnight early Saturday morning, leaving behind 1-2 inches of snow with 3 inches possible in some isolated spots.

Saturday will be a cold windy day with a warming trend starting on Monday with temperatures in the 40s.
