While it was not necessarily good news for those in the snowplowing business and those who wanted to spend the day sledding Thursday’s lack of snowstorm for most of Ocean County was a welcome sight.

The turnover from rain to snow took longer than forecasters had expected and the storm was for the most part a bust for the shore area while delivering a much bigger blow to North Jersey and New York.

Most schools in our area were closed based on the fact the storm was expected to be at its worst just around the time the school day would be getting into full swing.  As is usually the case I’m sure there was a lot of second-guessing from parents who have to make alternative arrangements during days when schools are closed.

However there shouldn’t be. School districts have to take the safety of all students and staff into consideration and use forecasts to help make decisions.  Considering there hasn’t been a true snow day this year it was the correct choice based on all the information available to close most area schools.  Better be safe than sorry!

Four Ocean County schools will wrestle for team sectional titles tonight and we are assured of having at least one advance to the group championships Sunday at the Pine Belt Arena.  Longtime foes Brick Memorial and Jackson Memorial will meet at the Jaguars Joe Perry Gymnasium to determine the Central Jersey Group 4 champions.

Also tonight Point Beach hosts Manville in the Central Jersey Group 1 final and Donovan Catholic heads to Holy Spirit to determine the Non-Public, South “B” champions.  Sectional champs from around New Jersey will head to the Pine Belt Arena in Toms River Sunday for a long day of championship wrestling.
