As we get closer to Election Day more and more of those lawn signs are popping up and while I assume there are some restrictions they are clearly not enforced.

I certainly understand the signs are a fairly cost-effective way for political parties to get the names of their candidate’s front and center but I think they have gone way overboard.First of all it’s become a game in some places, especially intersections to try and one-up the other. One party puts 2 or 3 signs into the lawn and next places 5 of their signs in the same area.

With all the races going on all of a sudden you have 15-20 signs at some intersections and frankly it looks pretty trashy. Of course the signs get wet, often shred and a littered area gets even worse. Not to mention they often sit there well after Election Day has come and gone.

Do towns have regulations about where the signs can be placed?  Are they allowed on county and state roads and who would police the situation?  I certainly understand the placement of signs on private property but shouldn’t they be limited to that?  You drive on some of the main roads and can’t avoid them and truthfully they don’t exactly improve the aesthetics of an area…if anything they add to the shoddy appearance that some places already have.

My pet peeve with lawn signs is not limited to those during election season. At least they have a relatively short window.  However it seems more and more businesses are placing lawn signs all over the place and I don’t understand how they get away with it. Again the problem is they don’t place one sign in an area but rather a bunch of them so you don’t miss the announcement of some sale going on.

It seems state roadways are the #1 choice but again does anyone have jurisdiction or care about what it looks like or is it just a case of nobody wanting to be bothered.

By the way so I am not a hypocrite I know our company has used lawn signs for special events from time to time. I would hope at the very least we remove them when the event is over but as the disclaimer says the opinions expressed are solely those of Kevin Williams and do not reflect those of the staff, management and sponsors;.you get the picture.
