National County Government Month happens every April. But this year, Monmouth County officials are turning it into more than window-dressing with a month-long food drive in partnership with the FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties.

Thirteen library branches and four county-operated buildings will be collection points. And the libraries are adding an incentive of their own. Anyone with overdue books, DVDs, CDs or other library items will get amnesty for their fines by donating food for the drive.

Tuesday’s kickoff at the FoodBank’s Route 66 headquarters features county Freeholders along with staffers from the county library system as well as Human and Social Service Departments.

The nonprofit FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties distributes about 7,000,000 pounds of food to several hundred food pantries, soup kitchents and shelters throughout the shore. See all about the organization at http://www.foodbankmoc.org.
