Matt Thaiss won his share of baseball championships during his high school days at Jackson Memorial but my guess is none matched what took place last night in Omaha, Nebraska.

The sophomore catcher helped Virginia win it’s first-ever NCAA championship with a 4-2 victory over defending champion Vanderbilt in the final game of the College World Series.  Thaiss was 0-3 last night but had a tremendous second year with the Cavaliers earning third team All-American honors after batting .323 with 10 homers and 67 RBI’s.

He was an All-State player for Frank Malta at Jackson and selected by the Boston Red Sox on the 32nd round of the 2013 draft but opted for Charlottesville, Virginia instead. Thaiss will no doubt attract even more interest next June when he is once again eligible for the draft.

One of the shore’s top returning high school football players has made his college choice known before the start of his senior season.  Red Bank Catholic’s Eddie Hahn has verbally committed to the University of Connecticut although what position he’ll play in college will be decided later.

Hahn quarterbacked the Caseys to a state sectional title in December and also played in the defensive backfield but UConn recruited him as an athlete who can play multiple positions.  Hahn earned first team All-Shore honors by the Shore Sports Network and was also one of RBC’s top basketball players this past winter.
