Monmouth Sheriff Shaun Golden did not identify the state employee, but information from his office says that it happened during qualification training at the outdoor firing range.

According to the Sheriff's office, the nine-millimeter handgun fired as the agent was holstering it during a familiarization drill.

He was treated for wounds considered non-life-threatening at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune after being tended on site by an emergency medical technician.

Investigation of the incident is being handled by members of the Howell Police Department and acting county Prosecutor Chris Grammiccioni's office.
