My subscription to Men’s Health magazine runs out in November and I will probably not renew it after many years as a subscriber.

Nothing wrong with the magazine but it seems to really be for men who are in their prime and physically fit, style conscious, tech savvy, adventurous and more likely to buy a Rolex then a Timex.  I feel like I’m on the outside looking in.

I do enjoy many of the articles and have shared them in the past.  The latest “20 Secrets to a Happier Life” offers tips on being happy and how that can make everything so much better and unlike drugs comes with no side effects.  Don’t have time for all 20 but here’s my top 12:

  1. Don’t just see dollar signs when it comes to your job and career. Other forms of compensation can be just as important.

  2. Strengthen your relationships with current and even past friends.

  3. Exercise can lift your spirits quickly so find a way to get on that cardio machine regularly.

  4. Don’t live (and die) by the clock when it comes to work.  Put the time and effort into projects to get them done correctly, not just to meet a deadline.

  5. Write thank you letters and notes. Remember it’s better to give then receive.

  6. Dance for 5 minutes a day. Or, if that’s not practical then listen to an upbeat song.

  7. Take a mental selfie and visualize yourself reaching your most important life goals.

  8. Long commutes and sitting in traffic don’t mix well.  If you can’t find a job closer to home then leave for work earlier and avoid the traffic.

  9. Be charitable but try and feel a connection to the charity or person you decide to help.

  10. Embrace cheap thrills by adding variety to your daily schedule.

  11. Don’t get caught up in comparing yourself to others. Be happy in what you and your family have.

  12. Smile even when there’s nothing to smile about. It makes you and others feel better.  Just be careful not to walk around with that stupid ear-to-ear grin like it’s painted on you.
