It was last night.  A rather hot Thursday during this heat wave.  A woman was walking along the Ocean Beach at North 1st Street when she encountered an unidentified man laying face up on the shore.  When she began to talk to him, he told her he wanted to take his own life.  His method of choice?  Drowning.

The woman had no cell phone with her and rushed home to call police who immediately dispatched units to the beach.  Upon arrival, Surf City Police Lieutenant John Casella and Patrolman Sean Raimondi immediately checked the water, the beach and dunes in the area but were unable to locate the man.  Surf City Fire/EMS was called in support of a search and possible water rescue.  Units from several agencies including the US Coast Guard, State Police, Ship Bottom, Barnegat and Beach Haven all went to aid in the search.  They found nothing.  Not a trace.

The woman who made the call described the man as 5’7 with a muscular build wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and jeans.

The search extended the length of Surf City from the ocean waters to Long Beach Boulevard.  It was called off at around 1:49 a.m. having turned up no signs of human remains in the water.

At this point, police tell Townsquare Media that no missing persons reports have been received by any local law enforcement agency.
