The Shore Conference Basketball Tournament has been dominated by Monmouth County schools, not only in recent years but pretty much throughout its history.

Lakewood was the last boy’s team to win the SCT and that was 22 years ago in 1991 and outside of the Piners rarely have any other Ocean County schools posed serious threats to the likes of Neptune and CBA.  The picture is even bleaker on the girl’s side where the only Ocean County team to ever win the SCT was Southern back in the early 80’s.  However 2013 appears a bit different at least through the first couple of rounds.

We have reached the quarterfinals of what is arguably the highlight of the basketball season at the shore and four of the final eight boys teams are from Ocean County.  Last night top-seeded Lakewood toppled Middletown North, 2nd seeded Point Pleasant Beach crushed defending champion Neptune, Toms River North beat Ocean and Jackson Memorial fought past St. Rose.  The Piners, Garnett Gulls, Mariners and Jaguars advance to Sunday’s “Elite 8” at Brookdale Community College.

11:00-         Lakewood            vs.     Matawan

12:45-         T.R. North           vs.     Colts Neck

2:30-           Jackson                vs.     Manasquan

4:15-           Pt. Beach              vs.     Manalapan

We will broadcast all but the Lakewood game on WOBM AM 1160/1310 with Matt Harmon and me calling a tripleheader from Brookdale.

The Girls quarterfinals are tomorrow at Brookdale with both Point Pleasant Boro and Point Pleasant Beach in the mix.  The 3rd seeded Panthers rallied past defending champ St. Rose in overtime and next meet Holmdel (2:30) while the Garnett Gulls improved to 20-0 after outscoring Monsignor Donovan to set up a meeting with St. John Vianney in tomorrow’s 4:15 finale.

Our Shore Sports Network will broadcast both the girls and boys semifinals next week and it will be interesting to see how many Ocean County schools are left standing.
