Sayreville cop catches infant tossed from window during house fire rescue

SAYREVILLE — A police officer helped four people, including a 1-month-old baby, jump to safety from a window on the second floor of a home that was engulfed by flames Monday.

When Sayreville Patrolman Brian Gay arrived at 11 Jacobsen St., he was told that there were four people trapped on the second floor of the house, where a fire erupted just before 2 p.m., NJ Advance Media reported.

Gay told NJ Advance Media he saw four people standing near a window and with the help of a neighbor, he had planned to use a ladder to help them escape. Instead, the occupants decided to jump out the window. Two girls between the ages of 8 and 10 jumped onto Gay, the article states. A mother then tossed the officer her 1-month-old son before jumping herself, according to the report. The did not sustain any serious injuries, according to NJ Advance Media.

The fire was extinguished by 3 p.m., according to reports.

The Sayreville public information officer and Patrolman Gay could not immediately be reached for comment.
