Youngsters with no choice but to experience the magic of Christmas and Hannukah in a hospital setting get a big wish fulfilled - a visit from Santa, courtesy of the Toms River Police Department.

The jolly old elf, with an assist from Chief Mitch Little and his elves, delivered gifts and good cheer to Children's Specialized Hospital and Community Medical Center in the township Thursday.

Each year, officers spend about a month preparing for the special mission to spread joy among children battling health problems, and their families.

Police collected more than $4,000 in cash and toys, and supplied restaurant gift cards for parents.

Toms River Police send a message of gratitude to everyone who, without thought of recognition or compensation, took the trouble to give the children a holiday they won't soon forget.
