Housing on the Eatontown facility was converted for civilian use after the storm hit in 2012 and the Federal Emergency Management Agency covered the rent.

FEMA planned to shut down the homes on April 30.

The federal government changed its plans and will now allow the residents to stay until Aug. 31. But they'll have to pay rent starting May 1. Monthly rents will range from about $1,100 to $1,900.

U.S. Rep. Christopher Smith, a Republican who represents the area, tells the Asbury Park Press he wants the government to reconsider the rent requirement.
