Since opening a brand-new Sayreville facility in January, Sammy's Hope has been a hit with the local community.

The organization provides resources for homeless dogs and cats to help treat and socialize them with a goal of finding a forever home.

Executive Director Darren Young said the recent closure of other shelters has created a demand for the service.

"There is a definitely a need in New Jersey, overall, for facilities like ours," Young explained.

Despite having to essentially start from scratch when they moved to Sayreville, Young said the community has rallied around to support their Animal Welfare & Adoption Center.

"We built up a volunteer base of about 100 people that all contribute anywhere from a couple hours a week to several hours a week," he said.

Sammy's Hope has partnered with many municipal shelters to help those facilities  alleviate capacity issues whenever possible.

Their center can support up to 12 dogs and 24 cats at any time. The animals receive special attention and training to help prepare them for foster and forever homes.

Young said their operation is designed to provide love and care for the abandoned animals while making them more adoptable and home-ready.

"The mission of Sammy's Hope is to find these homeless animals homes."
