Rutgers student from Toms River fatally shot

A Toms River man has been identified as a fatal victim of a double shooting Sunday night near the Rutgers University Newark campus, according to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.

Essex County Prosecutor's Office spokeswoman Katherine Carter said 21-year-old Shani Patel was killed around 10 p.m. in an apartment off-campus.

The other victim, only identified as Patel's 23-year-old roommate, graduated from Rutgers-Newark last year. He was undergoing surgery and listed in critical condition.

NJ Advance Media reports the shooting may have been a drug-related robbery. The shooting was not a random act and that there were no threats to the school community, according to University officials.

Carter said no suspects have been identified and that no arrests had been made.

Patel reportedly was an Economics major and graduated from Toms River High School North in 2012.
