Midway through the CR 539 Police Partnership Safety Initiative, the treacherous Ocean County highway is fatality-free. However, the number of driving-law breakers keeps inching upward.

According to information from the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office, officers in partnering forces have stopped just over 300 vehicles since the effort began August 15. They've resulted in 160 tickets and 10 arrests.

Speeders account for 50 citations, with moving violations attributable for 34 more. On the upside, there have been no crashes involving deaths or serious injuries, authorities said.

The initiative is aimed more at reinforcing common sense and rules of the road than at rolling up a ticket score. Nearly a dozen people have died on the highway since 2013, officials said.

Local, county and state law enforcement agencies continue patrols in marked and unmarked cars through September 15.
