Upgrades take place starting Friday morning on the Conrail (CSAO) Southern tracks between John Street and Central Avenue (County Route 528), alongside Lake Minetta, according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT).

Detours are scheduled to go into place in time for work to begin at 7 AM Friday, and stay in place until 7 PM Sunday. The timing depends on weather conditions. As of the moment, no rain is expected.

Northbound traffic shifts onto Oak Street, New Hampshire Avenue (County Route 632), and to Route 88 (Ocean Avenue) before rejoining Route 9.

Southbounders can expect to turn onto Central Avenue and take it to Cross Street before heading back to Route 9.

If work is completed ahead of schedule, the rerouting will be lifted accordingly, NJDOT officials said.

Why are they doing this? Apparently it's a rough crossing, according to the department. It's being replaced with a concrete underpinning and repaved approaches.

NJDOT carries real-time traffic information at 511nj.org, and also sends out notices via Twitter.
