Route 35 Mostly Open, But Not Quite Clear, For Summer…Got That?

Seems like just the other day we were telling you that New Jersey transportation officials decided to suspend Route 35 reconstruction on the northern barrier island during the busy season about to start. In fact, it was the other day. And, that isn’t exactly the case.

The New Jersey Department of Transportation (DOT) issued a “clarification” today. Workers will be present through summer – but not blocking travel lanes.

Still, if they’re on shoulders or at crossings, you’ll have the usual parade of orange cones and barrels, squad cars with flashing lights, and speed reductions.

Oh, and one more thing: This weekend, when anxious beachgoers flock to the shore – only one lane of the highway will be open southbound between Curtis Point Drive in Brick to Strickland Boulevard in Toms River. DOT says it’s unavoidable.

The good news is that the rest of the spiffy, smooth new blacktop should be navigable for the rest of the 12-and-a-half-mile stretch between Mantoloking and Seaside from 6 AM this Friday, May 23, through 12 Noon Tuesday, May 27.

Work on that snarky southbound section from Brick to Toms River will keep one lane closed from May 27 through June 26, DOT officials said. Okay, they didn’t use the term “snarky.” After that, they predict two lanes of travel through Labor Day.

Roadwork through Berkeley, Seaside Park, Seaside Heights and Toms River – mileposts 0 through 4 – stops June 13 and resumes after September 2.

Repairs in the Lavallette business district stop Friday, May 23 until at least September 2. The rest of the northbound work between mileposts 4 and 9, Lavallette through Brick, halts June 13.

New Jersey Natural Gas will continue its own upgrades regardless of road construction schedules.

The northernmost stretch, mileposts 9 through 12.5, between Mantoloking and Bay Head, is only one lane in each direction – no expansion plans here – and is largely done, though highway and side street roadwork is to be suspended May 23 through at least September 2.
