High temperatures could climb to 80 degrees on Monday and Tuesday, before a storm system looks to bring a good drenching to New Jersey.

Here are your weather headlines for Monday, September 28, 2015...

Before the Rain...

The weekend forecast called for rain, and we got... nothing! It was a tricky forecast all week long, with a strong high pressure to the north battling a storm system stalled off the coast of the Carolinas. That pressure gradient has not moved much, so we will continue to see mostly cloudy and breezy weather. Additionally, the threat for rough surf and strong rip currents will continue for the first half of the week.

Humidity has bumped up a notch overnight, and so it might get a little sticky on Monday. This will be especially true during the afternoon hours, as temperatures bump into the upper 70s to 80 degrees - warmer than yesterday by about 5 to 10 degrees. While skies will degrade from partly to mostly cloudy today, our only rain chance will be a stray sprinkle or shower; I think you can safely leave the umbrella at home.

A muggy night will lead to patches of fog and mild low temperatures overnight, near 70 degrees. During the day Tuesday, we will see more warm temperatures near 80 degrees, more thick clouds, and maybe an isolated shower.

The Rain...

As a front slowly moves through New Jersey late Tuesday through Wednesday, we will get a shot at some prolonged steady rain. That's a good thing! An inch or two (or more) of rainfall is possible, and that would do wonders for our increasing drought concerns.

As for timing, the steady rain could move into the Garden State as early as 5 p.m. Tuesday afternoon. The current forecast model solution shows raindrops potentially falling over New Jersey until early Thursday morning. If this forecast holds - and I currently have no reason to think otherwise - Wednesday could be a washout of a day, with periods of steady to occasionally heavy rain.

After the Rain...

Behind the rain, the full effects of the aforementioned front will take hold of the Garden State for the late part of the week. A brisk wind gusting over 30 mph will usher in some much cooler air. High temperatures will struggle to make it past the lower to mid 60s on Thursday and Friday, below average for early October.

There's another chance for rain on Friday and Saturday, but confidence is low in the exact timing and impacts at this time.
