TRENTON — Friday afternoon's commute was snowy, sloppy and slow with flakes falling all over the state.

"For the next three or four hours, roads will only get worse, not better," New Jersey 101.5 Meteorologist Dan Zarrow said of the steady snowfall that he expected to continue into the early evening. "Common sense, patience, and extra caution will go a long way in getting you home safely and sanely this afternoon/evening."

The state Department of Transportation considered Friday's snow a "spreading event" rather than one needing plows.

There were 250 salt spreads on roads in Central and South Jersey, with more available where needed, according to spokesman Dan Triana.

Triana advised drivers to leave plenty of distance between the cars around them and the road crews.

The speed limit on the New Jersey Turnpike was reduced to 45 mph from the Delaware Memorial Bridge to the George Washington Bridge.

Zarrow said he expects the "bullseye" of the snow to be along the coastal areas in Monmouth, Ocean and Atlantic counties, where 2-3 inches of snow will fall.

"Let's not be surprised if there are some 4s in there too," Zarrow said.

NJ Transit did not report any problems but some bus lines could experience delays.
