Long Beach Island and Seaside Park residents able to return home for the first time since Hurricane Sandy caused long backups on Route 72 heading for LBI.

Traffic headed east on Route 72 toward LBI (NJ DOT)

The delays started early as LBI  residents took advantage of being able to return home between  7 a.m. to 3 p.m. But there will be no access for homes in Holgate and North Beach, due to unsafe conditions in those areas.

To gain entry to the island, residents will have to show a re-entry placard, a driver's license or proof of residence, such as a tax bill. Nonresidents and those who do not have proper residence documentation will not be granted entry.

Only one vehicle per residence will be allowed to enter the island, and no children under 12 or pets are permitted.

Seaside Park administrators, meanwhile, say on the borough website they will allow residents back to their homes on Monday and Tuesday between 9AM and 3PM.

Residents will need to register at Central Regional High School beginning at 9AM and must provide proof of residence. A permit will be issued to cross over to Seaside Park. Each address is only permitted one passenger vehicle or pick-up truck. Residents will be permitted to exit and reenter to gather your belongs during the designated hours. You will not be permitted to cross the bridge after 3pm.
