A body was found 50-yards off shore around 8:30 p.m. by a side sonar device after the search for a 22-year-old Newark woman who had entered the river near the Victory Bridge in Perth Amboy and was soon swept away by the current early Saturday morning.

The discovery took place shortly after a 15-hour search was suspended.  The Coast Guard removed the body from the water on Sunday morning. Swift currents prevented the body from being removed until Sunday morning.  A positive identification has yet to be made.

The initial incident was witnessed by a friend of the woman, but their names have not been released.

A 25-foot response boat crew was dispatched from the Coast Guard's Sandy Hook Station, as was an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from the Atlantic City Air Station for a search that covered 30 miles.

They were being assisted in the search by New York City police divers and aviation crews, along with South Amboy and Perth Amboy police.
