ASBURY PARK — A lifeguard faces suspension and possible job loss after being photographed using his cell phone while on duty.

A concerned mother told News 12 New Jersey the lifeguard wasn't even paying attention to her when she snapped the picture right in front of his beach stand last Saturday. She gave the photo to beach safety supervisor Jon Bongiovanni. The mother's identity was not disclosed in the report.

Bongiovanni took disciplinary action against the guard after the incident was brought to his attention, according to the report.

There have been at least 11 drownings in New Jersey in swimming pools, lakes and the ocean since mid-June, including cousins who drowned at a beach in Belmar in June.
