There have really only been two American League baseball teams I have rooted for with any real passion because first and foremost I am a New York Mets fan.

However at the same time I will admit to being one who roots against the New York Yankees so whoever is playing them becomes my second favorite team at any given time.  I really liked those George Brett-led Kansas City Royals teams of the 70’s and later jumped on the Boston Red Sox bandwagon because of how often they played the Yankees in meaningful games.

I say this on a morning that Red Sox nation is celebrating their fourth World Series title in the last 15 years following a five-game series victory over the LA Dodgers, who have now gone 30 years without a title, two less than the Mets.

This was simply the Red Sox year from start to finish and I know that really hurts Yankee fans but take some solace in the fact you’ll probably be the favorite to win next year.

Since sports is supposed to be relief from all the negative news that surrounds us here’s a few random thoughts and notes:

  • The Giants simply stink. Can’t block anyone, can’t run, can’t tackle, can’t get out of their way.  What they can do is lose and will continue to do so.
  • This was a good weekend for Rutgers football. They didn’t play.
  • I’m going to need to purchase an AED for myself because this Penn State football team puts a lot of stress on my heart each week.
  • Is it too much to ask that Notre Dame lose a game and miss out on the college football playoffs?
  • 24 of the 43 Shore Conference schools that play football have qualified for the NJSIAA Playoffs. There will be five shore versus shore opening round matchups this weekend, Jackson Memorial at Brick, Brick Memorial at Freehold, Donovan Catholic at Mater Dei Prep, Ocean at Rumson and Middletown North at Long BranchVisit shoresportsnetwork.com for details.
