Bruno Mars broke the news during Fox's broadcast of the Saints-Seahawks playoff game and said he wanted to do "something fun...unexpected" during the February 2 game and invited Anthony Kiedis, Flea and the band to join him.

Drummer Chad Smith confirmed the news by tweeting a picture of a drumstick with the band's logo along with the Super Bowl logo.

RHCP will already be in the area for the  "Big Hello To Brooklyn" concert at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn the night before the Super Bowl, one of a number of concerts around the area for the game.

It's not the first time several bands have appeared together during the Super Bowl halftime show. Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams joined former Destiny's Child bandmates last year while Nicki Minaj and M.I.A. took the stage with Madonna in 2012 according to ESPN.

RHCP, known for performing shirtless, will be in for a shock at the cold weather game at Met Life Stadium. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012, and are currently on tour.

Other concerts scheduled for the week leading to the NFL's championship game include Fall Out Boy, TLC, Gavin DeGraw at the Wellmont Theatre in Montclair and the Goo Goo Dolls as part of VH1's Super Bowl Blitz according to Billboard.  The Bud Light Hotel, docked at Manhattan's Pier 88 will host performances by Run DMC, The Roots and Busta Rhymes, Foo Fighters and the Zac Brown Band  and Imagine Dragons.

Kendrick Lamar and Robin Thicke will healine ESPN's 10th annual Super Bowl Party, Maroon 5 plats the JBL Party at the Beacon Theater.
