Wednesday will be another wet day for the Garden State, with periods of steady to heavy rain possible, as temperatures remain way above normal through Christmas.

Here are your weather headlines for Wednesday, December 23, 2015...

Fog and Rain

New Jersey is waking up to some of the thickest fog of the season so far. Visibility is close to zero in spots, which will make the Wednesday morning rush hour quite challenging and could start building delays at the area airports.

By mid-morning, the fog will lift a bit and visibilities will start to improve. However, an impending warm front will bring rain to New Jersey for most of today. The rain will begin in South Jersey early this morning and traverse northward through the rest of the morning. Everyone is prone to get some extended period of steady-ish rain today.

The heaviest rain of the day looks to center around the afternoon, and may drag into the evening for the northern part of New Jersey. That's bad news for the multitudes of New Jerseyans who will be commuting and/or traveling today ahead of the Christmas holiday.

Forecast rainfall totals have bumped up again on this wet Wednesday, ranging from 0.4" to upwards of 2.0" through early Thursday morning when the rain finally exits the state.

Dreaming of a Warm Christmas

As the name implies, the warm front will carry even warmer, more humid into New Jersey for Christmas Eve on Thursday. Overnight low temperatures won't fall below 60 degrees for much of the Garden State, providing a warm start to a very warm day.

Our current high temperature forecast for Thursday ranges from around 70 degrees in North Jersey to the mid 70s in South Jersey. That will be about 30 degrees above normal, and record highs will fall. In fact, I think we may blow some records out of the water by about 10 degrees... incredible!

A few widely scattered showers will be possible on Christmas Eve Thursday as well. With the warmth and abundant humidity, those showers may throw out a few rumbles of thunder too.

Christmas Day will start warm, as temperatures peak close to 70 degrees in the morning. We do turn a bit cooler by late Friday, and again a few showers will be possible throughout the day.

The Weekend and Beyond

Forecast confidence remains unusually low for this weekend and beyond. It looks like a cooler air mass takes over our atmosphere for Saturday, but temperatures will still make it to the above normal range, in the lower to mid 50s. Sunday warms up again, thanks to a brisk southwest wind, and we may challenge records once again with near-70 degree temperatures to close out the weekend.

Meanwhile, skies will remain fairly unsettled, with showers possible for both Saturday and Sunday. For now, beyond today, there's no more truly "steady rain" expected through at least Monday night.

The long-range forecast continues to show a more permanent intrusion of cold air coming to the Northeast U.S. around New Year's Eve. No big snow in the forecast, but once temperatures return to near-or-below seasonal normals, we'll have to start keeping a close eye on any snow/ice potential.
