There can’t be too many people sorry to see the month of March come to an end because for the most part it’s been miserable.

Following one of the warmest February’s on record March often felt more like January and made us wonder when spring would finally arrive.  Today’s horrible weather is an appropriate way for the month to end although the extended forecast does not look that sunny for the first week of April either.  Maybe that February weather will return and brighten our days ahead.

Bottom line is for whatever reason it seems like in recent years spring has not really settled in until sometime in May.  We used to feel like once we got to St. Patrick’s Day or the first week in April it would all turn and we could spend days outside doing what we like.

However spring appears to get shorter each year while nice fall-like weather often extends well into November.  With all that said I sure hope we can count on summer coming through in grand fashion.

A sure sign that things will be getting better is the return of baseball.  The high school season is scheduled to start tomorrow although field conditions may be unplayable.  There’s an interesting matchup on Sunday as St. Joseph of Montvale, the pre-season top ranked team in the state visits #11 Toms River North.

The major league season begins Sunday for the Yankees (at Tampa Bay) and Monday for the Mets (home against Atlanta) and Phillies (in Cincinnati) and the Lakewood BlueClaws open their new season Thursday in Kannapolis, North Carolina with their home opener set for Thursday, April 13.

Hopefully it won’t be too long before we can enjoy watching a game in shorts and tee shirts although we’re likely to find coats and gloves more appropriate clothing for a few weeks.
