Putting the Brakes on Poor Parking

Lakewood police are cracking down on people who park poorly.

The Lakewood Scoop reports officers are issuing fewer warnings and more actual summonses for a variety of parking offenses, especially so-called "corner huggers" who block or partially obstruct an intersection.  Legally, you are required to park at least 50 feet away from any stop sign and 25 feet away from any known crosswalk - whether it's marked or not.

Fines for illegal and/or improper parking can range from $54 to $60.  And if your bad parking job causes a crash, you can be held legally liable.

The are also areas in the township where parking is not allowed within 100 feet of an intersection due to a high incidence of past accidents.  That restriction and the stricter enforcement are part of an effort to increase safety for both drivers and pedestrians.
