A new poll says most Americans want Congress to extend the payroll tax cut.

But lawmakers have let partisan sniping hold up the measure, the latest example of congressional bickering delaying or killing policies most Americans support.

The AP-GfK poll said nearly 6 in 10 respondents want the payroll tax cut renewed. The poll found that Democrats and independents are the strongest supporters of continuing the tax cut, while

Republicans were evenly divided.

Other policies with majority support, such as raising taxes on the wealthy and imposing emissions caps, also have been sidelined by infighting.

On the brink of the 2012 election year, the poll of 1,000 adults nationwide finds that nearly all Americans are disappointed and frustrated with the political scene.
